Over the past few years the NHL has been trying to increase scoring in their games. They have gotten rid of the two-line offside pass. They have added the trapezoid where goalies cannot play the puck. They’ve even stopped allowing teams to change lines after icing the puck to force teams to play tired and thus potentially give up goals. The NHL believes that more goals equals more excitement and thus more fans. If you ask the Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers the NHL is very wrong. Game two of the Stanley Cup Playoff series between these two teams had very much the same underlying script as the first game in the series. The Capitals outplayed the Rangers but veteran goalie Henrik Lundqvist kept his team in the game. The difference in this one was that this time he did an even better job. He was able to...

NBC has decided that hockey needs to be a staple in their sports broadcasting portfolio. To do this they need to bring more Americans into what has been a predominantly Canadian sport. They have taken a note from CBC’s “Hockey Night in Canada” and created “Hockey Day in America” (What a very original title). The problem is they have gone way overboard to the point of being obnoxious and possibly distracting to some fans. Read more here.

With their last two wins coming at home, the Capitals arrived in Florida seeking their first road win. They’d get it against the Panthers Tuesday night, and then would go on to defeat the rival Lightning on Thursday night to notch their third win in a row, the first legitimate win streak all season. Goaltender Braden Holtby would keep the Caps in the game early, but Tampa scored two late goals to make it 4-3. Thankfully, the Capitals held on to win and will go home to D.C. with four sorely needed points. They are no longer in last place in the Southeast – the Panthers went to overtime with the Montreal Canadiens, putting them a point behind the Capitals. It was a big night for secondary scoring and the power play. Troy Brouwer scored in his third straight game ,a power-play goal and his seventh of the season, to...

Was tonight "Dress Like A Seat Night" in Florida?

The only thing that could make it worse is if you were the team that blew them out. That is exactly what the Washington Capitals faced in Tuesday’s matchup against the Florida Panthers. On Friday, Dreams for Kids DC held their annual Extreme Recess with the Washington Capitals for 100 children with physical and developmental disabilities. I've attended this event with my son Joshua for the past three years. It’s one of the highlights of our year. When the lockout was in progress, it looked like the event wouldn't happen. Luckily, as soon as the lockout ended, Glenda Fu, Executive Director of Dreams for Kids DC, was able to schedule Extreme Recess with the Washington Capitals. Read more about the day here.

The season isn’t going well, there is no denying that. I think, however, we are all getting a little overexcited and reactionary. Luckily we have a very level-headed General Manager in George McPhee. He’s a man who likes to let teams, players and coaches work through their problems. Only when he thinks they’ve had enough time to right the ship and haven’t done so does he ever pull the trigger on moves. More here.
