The Opening Night That Isn’t (Update)

Capitals hockey fan royalty would have gone down to his secret beer portfolio archive to wet the palate before belting a healthy "LETS GO CAPS!" during the home opener. Sadly, he will lock himself in his beer dungeon for the formidable future.
Last month we started to make you aware of an event that we saw the very beginnings of becoming something big. Now with over 200 confirmed attendees to the event, we can officially say this will be a nice noticeable event. Nothing compared to a 20,000+ uptick in attendance in the area but positive none the less. If you need a refresher here is what is cooking to happen Friday, October 12th, 2012.
The night was scheduled to be a face off between the New Jersey Devils and Washington Capitals. One major detail. It isn't happening. As a result, the businesses that typically thrive off of this rush of people are now left with nothing due to the NHL lockout. Here's where you as a hockey fan come in. You were going to go to the game after waiting since the beginning of May for Caps hockey and you were going to be eating and drinking your way back into that routine that you set up around hockey. You were going to be ignoring your family who "don't understand hockey" and you were going to celebrate the maiden voyage of the 2012-13 season by going down to Chinatown. You can still do this and you will do this. With a strong backing from the local bars, there are major deals going on in Chinatown that you should not pass up. Here are two avenues to head down.
- Carry out your normal routine. You may have pregamed at Bar Louis then wandered over to The Greene Turtle then moseyed into the game during the 1st period. Whatever you did, do it again on Friday night.
- Head to participating bars in the area that will be offering great deals to help ease the pain that was to be Opening Night.
It's said that one bar will have Slapshot and classic hockey matches playing on the big screens so there will be definitely a "great" atmosphere on Friday night. We put great in quotes for the obvious WE SHOULD ACTUALLY BE WATCHING THE GAME! reason.
Facebook events here to RSVP:
Our friends over at Fado's put this flyer together to show where everything is going on. Visit their site for a list of more restaurants and bars involved. If you'd like to know where we are during the night, follow us over on Twitter @hockeyshopped . We'd love to meet you! We will be tweeting out our location on a constant basis and may go off topic from time to time. Regardless, we'd love to buy you a beer if you find us!
What Hockey Shopped recommends you wear:
- Capitals jersey that you were going to wear
- A piece of black tape over the NHL logo (See below as an example)
Last but not least, we'd like to leave you with a time lapse from last opening night. *tears*
